When the toenail penetrates the skin, it can result in an infection. This is referred to as an ingrown toenail. If you notice severe pain, pus coming out of a sore on your toe, or redness and swelling around the toenail and toe, call and schedule an appointment immediately.

Not only will it likely result in a deeper infection but letting an ingrown toenail go left untreated can result in surgery being necessary.

To keep yourself from getting ingrown toenails, make sure that you cut them often, and you cut them correctly.

The edges of the toenails should be short, not jagged. They should also be flat, not curved from side to side. Don’t wear shoes that are tight, either.
